Best wishes to all during this holiday season.

With a beautiful sunset beginning to unfold, I headed with my camera for one of the DuPage County Forest Preserves just a few miles from my house. All I needed to be happy was a few birds in flight against the yellow/orange backdrop of the setting sun.
I was not prepared for the sight of thousands of geese, flying in, landing, taking off, circling in great formations, and honking all the while. No individual image could capture the feeling of joy and excitement. In between the photos on my DSLR, I captured this video on my iPhone. Hope you like it.

This was such a lovely, refreshing, mesmerizing display. Lights were changing, glowing, running, keeping time to the music. I wanted to share the experience with everyone, so I captured it in video on my iPhone. Facebook didn't quite see it my way. Music from The Nutcracker was playing in the background of my video, and it seems the copyright to the music doesn't belong to me. So, sorry, you will have to just go see and hear for yourselves. Illuminations runs until January 1, 2018.

Next up on my adventure with the Morton Arboretum Photographic Society on November 30:
The Morton Arboretum's Meadow Lake provides the perfect backdrop for the Illumination experience. After rounding the bend and facing west towards the visitor center, the blue-lit trees are reflected on the pond. The starburst effect adds a magical touch to the scene.
Illumination: Tree Lights at the Morton Arboretum closes on January 1, 2018. Tickets are required.

More from Morton Arboretum's Illumination on November 30, 2017.
I called this the Split Personality Tree because of the multi-color illumination. I spent about ten minutes admiring the tree's shape and texture, and watching the colors change. It was a challenge to get the right timing and capture distinct colors. I was happiest with the magenta, blue, and green. What do you think?

Stop Two on the visit to Morton Arboretum's Illumination on November 30. Just around the bend from Meadow Lake was a group of trees lit up by a series of blue, red, and magenta lights. The moon was a few days away from fullness, and at this point was "in play" with the tree branches. I was happy to have captured it before it moved up higher in the sky.

"Illumination: Tree Lights at Morton Arboretum" is a magical winter experience that celebrates nature with light, music, and special sound effects. Since its beginning in 2013, it has evolved and expanded each year. Since this was my first time, everything was exciting and magical. I shared the one-mile walk with about thirty other photographers from MAPS (Morton Arboretum Photographic Society) and a few thousand others who enjoyed this very interactive experience.
I captured this image just past the entrance to Meadow Lake Magic, a combination of ever-changing colored lights illuminating the trees + reflections on Meadow Lake + running dots of lights across the lake.
