How did you do that? Experiment with oil and water

Color Series 2: Abstract #1 and Abstract #2.

These two images are the result of a simple photographic experiment with oil and water in a shallow, textured serving tray. The camera was angled down towards and through the tray to a multi-colored background, focusing on the oil globules and textured shapes of the tray and blurring out the background colors.

Lighting was directed onto the background below the tray to give a back-lit effect.

Here is my setup. The blue and yellow image on the floor, tray propped on soda cartons, which provided the red/green in the first image.
